The Escalera curriculum is designed for a cohort of junior and senior high school students. The curricular materials provide high-quality lesson plans and resources that fulfill the goals of the program, preparing students for college and careers. 

Core Competencies

A curriculum provides the framework and progression of a course of study. Starting with the strengths of the Escalera Program’s history, this curriculum was designed to address five core competencies, and the modules and lessons build on one another towards that end. These competencies were developed by a review of best practices in youth and workforce development and an analysis of best practices over the history of the Escalera Program.

For each core competence, performance tasks are embedded in the curriculum and assessed by program staff (and students themselves) over time. The core competencies are listed below. 

Career Exploration
Escalera graduates will be able to:

  • Develop and prioritize personal, educational, and career goals based on the understanding of their own current and future learning needs.
  • Utilize multiple lines of inquiry to collect information about career options.
  • Organize, evaluate, analyze and interpret findings from career research.
  • Make rational and well-informed career decisions.

Educational Attainment
Escalera graduates will be able to:

  • Complete a high school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Use multiple lines of inquiry to collect information about postsecondary education options that match career interests.
  • Research and navigate various financial aid resources for postsecondary education.
  • Make rational and well-informed decisions for their education based on career goals.

Leadership and Personal Development
Escalera students will be able to:

  • Collaborate effectively with others in a team.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills in group settings.
  • Access appropriate social, cultural, and supportive services in the community.
  • Contribute positively to their community.
  • Overcome adversity and setbacks through persistence and problem-solving.

Escalera graduates will be able to:

  • Navigate basic computer equipment and basic software programs for office environments.
  • Communicate electronically and with appropriate etiquette.
  • Use social media responsibly and protect their online privacy.
  • Use office software for projects related to careers and postsecondary options.

Job-Readiness Training
Escalera graduates will be able to:

  • Communicate effectively in a variety of workplace environments.
  • Use higher-order thinking skills to make decisions and solve problems.
  • Demonstrate appropriate behaviors and attributes (such as responsibility, self-esteem, social networking, and time management) in the workplace and during NCLR Escalera Program activities.
  • Use diverse strategies for securing entry-level employment (ie. resumes, applications, cover letters, and interviews).
  • Communicate and network with local professionals.
  • Investigate work-related systems, processes, and organizational structures within various sectors and corporations.
  • Refine job skills through work experience or an internship in a field of interest.
